Not a discussion for the faint of heart, Grantham systematically addresses various underlying biological and ecological trends. He draws the trend lines forward to illustrate how we appear poised to undermine our ability to thrive in the future. His frustration with systemic intransigence is as clear as his call to action.

Global Report on Trafficking in Persons 2018 https://www.revelio.com/2019/01/21/global-report-on-trafficking-in-persons-2018/ Mon, 21 Jan 2019 21:04:32 +0000 http://www.revelio.com/?p=12360 According to the International Labour Organization, in 2016 40.3 million people were victims of modern slavery, including 24.9 million in forced labor and 15.4 million in forced marriage.  This is the largest number of people enslaved at any time in history. A crime that disproportionately affects women and girls, forced labor is deeply embedded in many companies’ supply chains, often (but not always) without their knowledge. (Many consumer products are produced with some forced labor. http://slaveryfootprint.org/) This UN report published in 2018, provides a comprehensive overview of the global problem.

Women in Finance, A Case For Closing Gaps https://www.revelio.com/2019/01/21/women-in-finance-a-case-for-closing-gaps/ Mon, 21 Jan 2019 18:21:04 +0000 http://www.revelio.com/?p=12344 Christine Lagarde famously quipped, “If Lehman Brothers had been a bit more Lehman Sisters … we would not have had the degree of tragedy that we had as a result of what happened.” Not surprising, the IMF chief knew what she was talking about.  According to an IMF paper published in September, 2018, the presence of women on the boards was a distinguishing feature of bank stability. This is but one of several interesting findings in the paper, which also includes references to other important research publications in the field.

Journal of Environmental Investing https://www.revelio.com/2018/02/09/journal-of-environmental-investing/ Fri, 09 Feb 2018 00:31:10 +0000 http://www.revelio.com/?p=12192 This issue of the JEI tackles the many questions around data and sustainable investing.  Lack of universal standard, subjectivity, and inconsistency of measurement and disclosure are just a few of the challenges addressed in the many white papers herein.  Beyond that, several papers discuss what data investors need, but are not getting, and suggest areas for improvement.  And yet, for all of the shortcomings of the data, several other papers discuss various ways that imperfect data can still deliver value for investors.  Overall, a very good overview for anybody interesting in understanding the strengths and weaknesses of sustainability data.
